MY NAME IS KAREN DEMBA. I am a UNC-Chapel Hill student, and I am passionate about art in any shape or form and journalism. I have been making art my whole life and hope to include my love for art in my future career, which is why I decided to major in media and journalism. In this portfolio, I take the opportunity to showcase my love for digital art, videography, editing, and to show off my theatre accomplishments.
I started drawing on Procreate a few months ago, but I have loved watching other videos of artists drawing on their iPads way before. I got into digital art because of how versatile it is. You can paint, sketch, animate, and so much more through just one app. I often draw silly cats as a way to reduce stress. I like to use bright colors for my drawings, and I add very few details. I do that because Society often rewards intricate and complex art, which puts a lot of pressure on the artists and on those who want to get into drawing. I believe that my silly cats are proof that good art isn’t necessarily complex art, but instead it is whatever the artist wants to make. At the end of the day, beauty is subjective.
I got into video editing when I started my Media and Journalism 121 class, which is how I found out how fun it is. I like the fact that you can make a video look completely different. It’s as if you can share the way you see the world with your viewers. I also like taking videos! It’s so fun how you can tell a story through how you position your camera, angles, and so much more.
Playwriting is my little hidden talent. I wrote a play mixing multiple fairy tales during my sophomore year! It got a standing ovation. I haven’t written in a while but my brain is brimming with stories.
